ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡ.
ಅಥ ಚತುಶ್ಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ||

ಸಂದಿಷ್ಟೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಂದ್ರೇಣ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಸುತೋ ಬಲೀ|
ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೀ ಮಹದಂಷ್ಟ್ರೋ ನಿರ್ಜಗಾಮ ಧನುರ್ಧರಃ||1||

ಸ|| ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಸುತಃ ಮಹಾದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಃ ಧನುರ್ಧರಃ ಬಲೀ ಜಂಬುಮಾಲಿ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಂದ್ರೇಣ ಸಂದಿಷ್ಟಃ ನಿರ್ಜಗಾಮ||

Ordered by the king of Rakshasas, Jambumaali , the powerful son of Prahasta, with big teeth carrying a bow went (for battling Hanuman).

ರಕ್ತಮಾಲ್ಯಾಬರಧರಃ ಸ್ರಗ್ವೀ ರುಚಿರಕುಂಡಲಃ|
ಮಹಾನ್ವಿವೃತ್ತನಯನಃ ಚಂಡಃ ಸಮರದುರ್ಜಯಃ||2||
ಧನುಶ್ಶಕ್ರಧನುಃ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಂ ಮಹದ್ರುಚಿರಸಾಯಕಮ್|
ವಿಷ್ಫಾರಯಾಣೋ ವೇಗೇನ ವಜ್ರಾಶನಿಸಮಸ್ವನಮ್||3||
ತಸ್ಯ ವಿಷ್ಫಾ ರ ಘೋಷೇಣ ಧನುಷೋ ಮಹತಾ ದಿಶಃ|
ಪ್ರದಿಶಶ್ಚ ನಭಶ್ಚೈವ ಸಹಸಾ ಸಮಪೂರ್ಯತ||4||

ಸ|| ( ಸಃ) ರಕ್ತಮಾಲ್ಯಾಂಬರಧರಃ ಸ್ರಗ್ವೀ ರುಚಿರಕುಣ್ಡಲಃ ಮಹಾನ್ವಿವೃತ್ತನಯನಃ ಸಮರದುರ್ಜಯಃ|| (ಸಃ) ಮಹತ್ ರುಚಿರಸಾಯಕಂ ಶಕ್ರಧನುಃ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಂ ಧನುಃ ವಜ್ರಾಶನಿಸಮಸ್ವನಮ್ ವೇಗೇನ ವಿಷ್ಫಾರಯಣಃ (ನಿರ್ಜಗಾಮ) || ತಸ್ಯ ಧನುಷೋ ಮಹತಾ ವಿಷ್ಫಾರಘೋಷೇಣ ದಿಶಃ ಪ್ರದಿಶಶ್ಚೈವ ನಭಶ್ಚೈವ ಸಹಸಾ ಸಮಪೂರ್ಯತ||

He was adorned with garland of red flowers and clothes, wearing a chaplet. With beautiful earrings and big round eyes he was fierce and invincible in war. He quickly left for the battle, with big radiant arrows, with a bow like that of Indra's bow, making loud noise as if thundering like the thunderbolt. The great thundering noises of his bow filled all the directions including the sky and other worlds.

ರಥೇನ ಖರಯುಕ್ತೇನ ತಮಾಗತಮುದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಃ|
ಹನುಮಾನ್ ವೇಗಸಂಪನ್ನೋ ಜಹರ್ಷ ಚ ನನಾದ ಚ||5||
ತಂ ತೋರಣ ವಿಟಂಕಸ್ಥಂ ಹನುಮಂತಂ ಮಹಾಕಪಿಮ್|
ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೀ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುರ್ವಿವ್ಯಾಥ ನಿಶಿತೈಶ್ಶರೈಃ|| 6||

ಹನುಮಾನ್ ವೇಗಸಂಪನ್ನಃ ರಥೇನ ಖರಯುಕ್ತೇನ ಆಗತಂ ತಂ ಉದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಜಹರ್ಷ ಚ ನನಾದ ಚ||ಜಂಬುಮಾಲಿ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ ನಿಶಿತೈಃ ಶರೈಃ ತಂ ತೋರಣ ವಿಟಂಕಸ್ಥಂ ಮಹಾಕಪಿಂ ಹನೂಮಂತಂ ವಿವ್ಯಾಥ ||

Hanuman endowed with great speed, seeing him come with a chariot drawn by donkeys was delighted and and made a loud noise. The powerful Jambumaali hit the great Vanara Hanuman who was standing on the archway with arrows.

ಅರ್ಥ ಚಂದ್ರೇಣ ವದನೇ ಶಿರಸ್ಯೇಕೇನ ಕರ್ಣಿನಾ|
ಬಾಹೋರ್ವಿವ್ಯಾಥ ನಾರಾಚೈರ್ದಶಭಿಸ್ತಂ ಕಪೀಶ್ವರಮ್||7||
ತಸ್ತ ತಚ್ಛುಶುಭೇ ತಾಮ್ರಂ ಶರೇಣಾಭಿಹತಂ ಮುಖಮ್|
ಶರದೀವಾಂಬುಜಂ ಪುಲ್ಲಂ ವಿದ್ಧಂ ಭಾಸ್ಕರ ರಶ್ಮಿನಾ||8||
ತತ್ತಸ್ಯ ರಕ್ತಂ ರಕ್ತೇನ ರಂಜಿತಂ ಶುಶುಭೇ ಮುಖಮ್|
ಯಥಾಕಾಶೇ ಮಹಪದ್ಮಂ ಸಿಕ್ತಂ ಚಂದನ ಬಿಂದುಭಿಃ||9||

ಸ|| ಅರ್ಥ ಚಂದ್ರೇಣ ವದನೇ ಏಕೇನ ಕರ್ಣಿನಾ ಶಿರಸಿ ದಶಾಭಿಃ ನಾರಾಚೈಃ ಬಾಹ್ವೋಃ ತಂ ಕಪೀಶ್ವರಂ ವಿವ್ಯಾಥ||ಶರೇಣ ಅಭಿಹತಂ ತಾಮ್ರಂ ತತ್ ಮುಖಂ ಶರದಿ ಭಾಸ್ಕರೇಣ ವಿದ್ಧಂ ಫುಲ್ಲಂ ಅಮ್ಬುಜಮ್ ಇವ ಶುಶುಭೇ|| ರಕ್ತೇನ ರಂಜಿತಂ ರಕ್ತಂ ತಸ್ಯ ತತ್ ಮುಖಂ ಚಂದನಾಬಿಂದುಭಿಃ ಸಿಕ್ತಂ ಆಕಾಶೇ ಮಹಾಪದ್ಮಂ ಯಥಾ ಶುಶುಭೇ||

He troubled the best of Vanaras with a crescent shaped arrow on his face, with ten ear shaped arrows to the head and shoulders. Hit by the arrows his reddish face looked like a full blown lotus in atumn season hit by the rays of Sun. His red face glowing with blood was like a red lotus in the sky sprinkled with drops of red sandal.

ಚುಕೋಪ ಬಾಣಾಭಿಹತೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಸ್ಯಮಹಾಕಪಿಃ|
ತತಃ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇsತಿವಿಪುಲಾಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಮಹತೀಂ ಶಿಲಾಮ್|10|||
ತರಸಾ ತಾಂ ಸಮುತ್ಪಾಟ್ಯ ಚಿಕ್ಷೇಪ ಬಲದ್ಬಲೀ|
ತಾಂ ಶರೈರ್ದಶಭಿಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ ತಾಡಯಾಮಾಸ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಃ||11||

ಸ|| ಬಾಣಾಭಿಹಿತಃ ಮಹಾಕಪಿಃ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಸ್ಯ ಚುಕೋಪ | ತತಃ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ ಅತಿವಿಪುಲಂ ಮಹತೀಂ ಶಿಲಾಂ ದದರ್ಶ| ಬಲೀ ತಾಂ ತರಸಾ ಸಮುತ್ಪಾಟ್ಯ ಬಲವತ್ ಚಿಕ್ಷೇಪ | ರಾಕ್ಷಸಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ ತಾಂ ದಶಾಭಿಃ ಶರೈಃ ತಾಡಯಾಮಾಸ||

Hit by the arrows of the Rakshasa Hanuman was enraged. Then he saw a huge rock on the side. The mighty one having quickly lifted that one hurled the same. The enraged Rakshasa smashed that with ten arrows.

ವಿಪನ್ನಂ ಕರ್ಮ ತದ್ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಹನುಮಾಂಶ್ಚಂಡವಿಕ್ರಮಃ|
ಸಾಲಂ ವಿಪುಲಮುತ್ಪಾಟ್ಯ ಭ್ರಾಮಯಾಮಾಸ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್||12||
ಭ್ರಾಮಯಂತಂ ಕಪಿಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸಾಲವೃಕ್ಷಂ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್|
ಚಿಕ್ಷೇಪ ಸುಬಹೂನ್ ಬಾಣಾನ್ ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೀ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ||13||
ಸಾಲಂ ಚತುರ್ಭಿಶ್ಚಿಚ್ಛೇದ ವಾನರಂ ಪಂಚಭಿರ್ಭುಜೇ|
ಉರಸ್ಯೇಕೇನ ಬಾಣೇನ ದಶಭಿಸ್ತು ಸ್ತನಾಂತರೇ||14||

ಸ|| ಚಣ್ಡವಿಕ್ರಮಃ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ ಹನುಮಾನ್ ತತ್ ಕರ್ಮ ವಿಪನ್ನಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ವಿಪುಲಂ ಸಾಲಂ ಉತ್ಪಾಟ್ಯ ಭ್ರಾಮಯಾಮಾಸ|| ಸಾಲವೃಕ್ಷಂ ಭ್ರಾಮಯಂತಂ ಮಹಾಬಲಂ ಕಪಿಂ ದ್ರುಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೀ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ ಸುಬಹೂನ್ ಬಾಣಾಮ್ ಚಿಕ್ಷೇಪ||ಸಾಲಂ ಚತುರ್ಭಿಃ ಚಿಚ್ಛೇದ ವಾನರಂ ಪಂಚಭಿಃ ಭುಜೇ ಉರಸಿ ಏಕೇನ ಬಾಣೇನ ಸ್ತನಾಂತರೇ ದಶಭಿಃ ಚಿಚ್ಛೇದ||

The fierce warrior Hanuman seeing that action being thwarted , saw a big tree , pulled out the same and started whirling. Seeing the mighty Vanara whirling the Sala tree , the mighty Jambumali attacked ( Hanuman) with many arrows. He cut off the tree with four arrows , and hit Vanara with five arrows on his shoulder, one arrow on his chest and ten arrows below the chest.

ಸ ಶರೈಃ ಪೂರಿತ ತನುಃ ಕ್ರೋಧೇನ ಮಹತಾವೃತಃ|
ತಮೇವ ಪರಿಘಂ ಗೃಹ್ಯ ಭ್ರಾಮಯಾಮಾಸ ವೇಗತಃ||15||
ಅತಿವೇಗೋsತಿವೇಗೇನ ಭ್ರಾಮಯಿತ್ವಾ ಬಲೋತ್ಕಟಃ|
ಪರಿಘಂ ಪಾತಯಾಮಾಸ ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೇರ್ಮಹೋರಸಿ||16||

ಸ|| ಶರೈಃ ಪೂರಿತ ತನುಃ ಸಃ ಮಹತಾ ಕ್ರೋಧೇನ ವೃತಃ ವೇಗಿತಃ ತಂ ಪರಿಘಮೇವ ಗ್ರುಹ್ಯ ಭ್ರಾಮಯಾಮಾಸ ||ಬಲೋತ್ಕಟಃ ಅತಿವೇಗಃ ಪರಿಘಂ ಅತಿವೇಗೇನ ಭ್ರಾಮಯಿತ್ವಾ ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೇ ಮಹೋರಸಿ ಪಾತಯಾಮಾಸ||

With arrows all over his body , angry Hanuman took the same iron spear and started whirling again. Hanuman of immeasurable strength, with great speed whirling the iron spear threw it the chest of Jambumali.

ತಸ್ಯ ಚೈವ ಶಿರೋನಾಸ್ತಿ ನ ಬಾಹೂ ನ ಚ ಜಾನುನೀ|
ನ ಧನುರ್ನರಥೋ ನಾಶ್ವಾಸ್ತ್ರತ್ರಾದೃಶ್ಯಂತ ನೇಷವಃ||17||
ಸ ಹತಃ ಸಹಸಾತೇನ ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೀ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ|
ಪಪಾತ ನಿಹತೋ ಭೂಮೌ ಚೂರ್ಣಿತಾಂಗವಿಭೂಷಣಃ||18||

ಸ|| ತತ್ರ ತಸ್ಯ ಶಿರಃ ಚೈವ ನಾಸ್ತಿ| ಬಾಹೂ ನ | ಜಾನುನೀ ನ| ಧನುಃ ನ | ರಥಃ ನ | ಅಶ್ವಾಃ ನಾದೃಶ್ಯಂತಃ |ಇಷವಃ ನ||ಜಂಬುಮಾಲೀ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ ಸಹಸಾ ತೇನ ಹತಃ ನಿಹತೌ ಚೂರ್ಣಿತಾಂಗವಿಭೂಷಣಃ ಭೂಮೌ ಪಪಾತ||

Then his head was not seen. No shoulders, no knees, no chariot , or the horses were seen. Nothing was left. With all parts of his body smashed to peices, the mighty Jambumali was quickly killed by him and fell on the ground.

ಜಂಬುಮಾಲಿಂ ಚ ನಿಹತಂ ಕಿಂಕರಾಂಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಬಲಾನ್|
ಚುಕ್ರೋಧ ರಾವಣಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕೋಪಸಂರಕ್ತಲೋಚನಃ||19||

ಸ|| ರಾವಣಃ ಮಹಾಬಲಾನ್ ಕಿಂಕರಾಂಶ್ಚ ಜಂಬುಮಾಲಿಂ ಚ ನಿಹತಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕೋಪಸಂರಕ್ತ ಲೋಚನಃ ಚುಕ್ರ್ರೋಧ||

Ravana hearing the death of Jambumali and the Kinkaras became enraged with blood oozing out of his eyes.

ಸ ರೋಷಸಂವರ್ತಿತ ತಾಮ್ರ ಲೋಚನಃ
ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತಪುತ್ರೇ ನಿಹತೇ ಮಹಾಬಲೇ|
ಅಮಾತ್ಯಪುತ್ರಾನ್ ಅತಿವೀರ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಾನ್
ಸಮಾದಿದೇಶಾಶು ನಿಶಾಚರೇಶ್ವರಃ||20||

ಸ|| ಸಃ ನಿಶಾಚರೇಶ್ವರಃ ರೋಷಸಂವರ್ತಿತ ತಾಮ್ರಲೋಚನಃ ಮಹಾಬಲೇ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತಪುತ್ರೇ ನಿಹತೇ ಅಮಾತ್ಯಪುತ್ರಾನ್ ಅತಿವೀರ್ಯ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾನ್ ಆಶು ಸಮಾದಿದೇಶ ||

As the mighty Jamubmali was killed, the Rakshasa king with his eyes red and rolling in anger ordered the sons of the ministers who are highly valiant warriors.

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯೇ
ಚತುರ್ವಿಂಶತ್ ಸಹಸ್ರಿಕಾಯಾಂ ಸಂಹಿತಾಯಾಮ್
ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡೇ ಚತುಶ್ಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||

Thus ends the forty fourth Sarga of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the very first poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
